If we played word association, what would be the the first thing that pops into your head when I say “cardigan”? Comfy? Snuggly? Cocoa? Mine too. But a cardigan actually has the capacity to take you from casual evenings knitting whilst watching jeopardy (one of my favorite past times) to turning heads at a fundraising gala.
A slouchy, over-sized piece is what I seek when I’m going for a casual look. But there are ways to elevate it from the just-rolled-out-of-bed-and-into-math-class-in-the-same-clothes vibe.
For instance, the exaggerated sleeves are trending right now and give off this effortless, unconcerned aura.
Add to that the stripe detail reminiscent of a rugby shirt and pockets – because pockets make everything better- and you get something that’s far from schlubby.
Features that make a blazer business casual ready can also apply to a cardigan.
Tailored fit. Usually dark, solid colors. And, for me, buttons that are a little more special than more generic plastic ones.
This little cardigan ticks off all those boxes. Slim fitting but not body hugging. A deep navy that pairs easily with most any color. And sweet little navy and gold lacquer buttons to add some interest.
I haven’t been proper “clubbing” for years. I mean the kind of clubbing where you get zhushed up and decked out and comfort can be factored out of the equation.
You can find sexiness in a cardigan by selecting and alluring print, like leopard. Or by going for a tighter fit.
And in this example, these spikes on the shoulder are sure to add smolder as you give the “come hither” over them.
I think the cardigan options for cocktail party type environments are endless. This setting is one of the few times I enjoy wearing something “pretty” and without edge.
Ladylike, if you will. Although most of the time I won’t. I love this marigold yellow option. The lace fabric is just beautiful.
It’s flowy so it flutters as you move, a charming feature as you glide from guest to guest, martini in hand.
Dressing for special occasions is a favorite of mine because it’s an excuse to splash out even more than I already do.
Of course you can wear velvet or sequin or jewel tones and there are cardigans with all of these features. There are no words for how I feel about this shimmering rose gold stunner, so I’ll just have you look at it and come up with your own.
Can you imagine: hair piled in an updo, sparkling earrings or necklace, popping some leg through those side slits as you make your entrance down the grand staircase? #RIPeverybody
So, there you have it. Cardigans fitting seamlessly into all your life’s demands. I think most people have some iteration of cardigan and I consider them to be a wardrobe staple, no matter your aesthetic. So, look in your closet, pull them out and style them to their fullest potential!

Dita
